When I was approached by Happiful magazine to share my story, it was an immediate YES!

The more we talk about mental health, the more we reduce the damaging stigma surrounding the topic. Our mental health is part of who we are now, where we have been and where we are going!

Read about my journey from mental ill health to mental wellness coaching on the Happiful website, and as ever, get in touch if anything resonates with you!

So you’ve heard of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), right?

With lockdown lifting again and another ‘new normal’ emerging, are you now experiencing FOGO, The Fear of Going Out?

We will all have different fears as we start to go out more and connect with others. This could be, for example, fear of catching Covid19 or passing Covid19 on to others or fear of the unknown, uncertainty and change.

Even basic needs like going to the toilet or shopping have changed.

Photo of a male/female public toilet sign, with the title "Game of Thrones* *public toilets"

The Game of (Public Toilet) Thrones

Firstly, you know in general that public toilets are not the cleanliest of places to visit so you have probably already pre-planned what toilets you intend to use.

Then you have got to open/close and un/lock the cubicle door with your elbows or feet and eventually you know deep down that you are going to have to use your hands at some point.

The art of squatting and balancing has been taken to a whole new level. It is a bit like that game you played as a kid where you had to jump from furniture to furniture to avoid the ‘lava’ carpet.

Avoiding touching the toilet seat with your bum cheeks tests out your thighs muscle strength, whilst multi-task by being mindful of clothes, coat, bag etc not lingering on any surfaces.

After touching a metal flush/door lock/tap/hand dryer button, you finally feeling you have won the game. Only to then touch the exit door handle on your way out. Bring your own hand sanitiser!

Supermarket Sweep Graphic

Supermarket Sweep

Clearly marked shopfloor arrows and distance markers are all disregarded by ‘Bendy Brenda’ who has a special power of being your own personal Space Invader.

As you grab your sanitised trolly or basket, then pick up fresh unwrapped fruit that has been touched a million times by ‘Best Before Date Barry’

Feeling a tinge of sadness, as you notice well-known high street stores holding closing-down sales and signs saying ‘everything must go’

Clothes shopping time that used to be spent enjoyed trying on items, now spent in queues returning items.

Clammy hands, thumping chest, gasping for air, all whilst wearing a face mask!

The Covid-19 Road Map: Step 2 and Beyond

Road Map Step 2 and Beyond

As the roadmap continues to lift with Covid safety precautions in places such as gyms, hairdressers and bars and restaurants, for some this will impact mental health illness and for others improve mental health wellness.

  • A haircut can bring on a panic attack or make you feel like a million dollars
  • Leaving the house for exercise can be overwhelming or make you feel amazing
  • Socialising around people can bring on anxiety or bring about laughter and joy

We are all different and we will all have our own emotions, responses, priorities, preferences, and boundaries. Let us simply be aware of these and honour that this will be unique for each of us.

So go at your own pace, one that is exactly right for you and one that your mental health wealth will thank you for.

People with Bipolar have their own unique experience.

I feel most mentally unwell when I experience manic episodes with psychosis. This means I experience extreme high moods alongside hallucinations and delusions.

For others, their darkest times of Bipolar can be when they are experiencing deep depression. For others, their illness can be a cycle of hypomanic and depressive states.

Regaining and maintaining mental health wealth is so personal that one size does not fit all and Bipolar is certainly not a linear disorder to live with.

Do you know what though?

Neither is life, right?

So, how can you ride the waves of life with ease and even prevent an almighty crash of waves from taking over your life?

One of many ways is by raising your awareness of your triggers and early warning signs to prevent a decline or relapse. Then by making positive changes for yourself can bring you back to a life full of mental health wealth.

Triggers

Triggers are usually stressful events or circumstances that trigger your symptoms of Bipolar.

These can be things like caring responsibilities, bereavement and anniversaries, a job at risk of redundancy/unhealthy environment, physical illness, overwhelm of too many life/workloads or exciting projects and happy life events.

Early Warning Signs

Early warning signs are symptoms and behaviours that show up in your Bipolar.

These can include unstable mood such as feeling extreme excitement and happiness to feeling suicidal, less need for sleep, anxiety, rapid thinking, loss of appetite, self-neglect, and can lead to unhealthy coping habits such as drinking more alcohol.

Positive Changes

Once you have raised your awareness of your own triggers and early warning signs, you can make positive changes to how you think, feel, and behave to bring about mental health wealth and start to shift towards a life full of purpose.

So, I would love to know what positive changes do, or can, you make for your mental health wealth?

Here are my 7 positive changes:

  1. Having a healthy sleep routine
  2. Exercise such as taking my dog for a walk and being in nature
  3. Nurturing my body with mood foods rich in vitamin D, omega 3 and folic acid
  4. Avoiding too much coffee and staying hydrated with water
  5. Slowing down my pace of life, taking breaks, self-care and me-time
  6. Strategies, tools, and techniques such as Coaching and NLP techniques
  7. Support network and having my vibe tribe such as my fiancé, family, friends, professionals, and clients

Our mental health, such as experiencing anxiety and depression, can hugely affect our low self-esteem and self-belief.

We all have times when our inner voice and opinions become unkind and we lack confidence in our self-worth and abilities.

Our struggles with self-esteem and self-belief can then feed into our mental health, sometimes causing a vicious cycle and creating long-term stuck patterns in our thoughts and behaviours.

Limiting beliefs are not facts.

The good news is, that these thoughts and behaviours can become unstuck and you can be kind to your mind!

The Life Coach Directory recently, kindly asked me to write a guest blog for them about mental health and how it can affect self-esteem. In the blog, I also touch on how coaching can help build your self belief and improve your mental health.

Check out the blog on the Life Coach Directory, for three ways to build your self belief and improve your mental health.

If you think coaching could be for you, why not book a free discovery session and have a chat?
